Marvin Daniel “Danny” LaRose, one of the great Mizzou football players of all time and the team’s biggest star of the 1960 Big Eight championship team, died Monday in Luther, Mich. LaRose, 80, from Crystal City, Mo., moved to upstate Michigan after his playing career in the NFL.
A two-way end for Dan Devine’s Tigers from 1958-60, LaRose earned All-Big Eight honors all three years he played for the Tigers (first team in 1958, 1960; second team in 1959) and was a consensus All-American in 1960, when he finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting. He’s just one of three players in team history to finish in the award’s top 10, along with quarterbacks Paul Christman (third in 1939, fifth in 1940) and Chase Daniel (fourth in 2007).
