The rapid spread of legalized sports betting across the country has brought tax windfalls to many states. But it also has its shady side, which is starkly illustrated by former Mizzou basketball player Jontay Porter. He now faces the possibility of serving time in jail for his on-court actions in the NBA that amounted to the sports-wagering equivalent of insider trading in business.
Porter, who already had been banned for life by the NBA, entered a guilty plea in New York federal court this week to conspiracy to commit wire fraud by removing himself from games in order to influence some betting outcomes.
