COLUMBIA, Mo. — Opening preseason practices without a starting quarterback isn’t ideal, but it’s nothing new for Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz. In four of his last six seasons as a coach — all during his coordinator days at Arkansas State, Boise State and North Carolina State — Drinkwitz kicked off preseason camp with a quarterback competition.
To prove it, he rattled off the years and the competitors on Monday.
“Yeah, 2013 at Arkansas State we had an open competition between a grad transfer quarterback and our redshirt freshman and redshirt sophomore,” he said. “In 2015 at Boise State we had an open competition with Ryan Finley and Brett Rypien.
