A jumper with 3:50 left in the first quarter of Saturday’s Southeastern Conference tournament semifinal round sealed Sophie Cunningham’s fate in the Missouri women’s basketball record books.
With the shot, she became MU’s all-time leading scorer. Her 33-point effort gave her 2,157 career points, breaking Joni Davis’ 2,126-point record set in 1985.
But Cunningham’s performance against Mississippi State wasn’t enough to overcome the top-seeded Bulldogs, who pulled away early and won 71-56 for a spot in the championship game against either Texas A&M or Arkansas.
It was clear from the start that the Bulldogs wanted to avenge their only SEC loss in two years that came by way of Missouri on Feb.
