COLUMBIA, MO. • Derrick Chievous’s record-breaking Missouri basketball career came to an end 31 years ago, and when the school didn’t immediately retire his jersey, he gave up the dream of seeing his No. 3 hang in the rafters.
Chievous, 51 and still Mizzou’s career scoring leader, has lived in Columbia for years but has remained famously out of the public eye, which is why he was especially surprised when Mizzou athletics director Jim Sterk called him earlier this month.
“I was kind of thrown off,” Chievous said, “because I was wondering how he had my number.
