COLUMBIA, Mo. — Sparky Woods wasn’t sure he wanted his son following him into college football coaching. Sparky had been a head coach at Appalachian State and South Carolina and an assistant at Tennessee, Iowa State, Memphis, Mississippi State and other stops in between.
In 2001, his son Casey was an all-state high school quarterback in Starkville, Miss. He’d been accepted to Mississippi State’s bioengineering program.
“We thought we’d get a doctor or something like that,” Sparky said in a phone interview from North Carolina. “We were kind of fired up.
“He turned out to be a doggone ball coach.
