COLUMBIA, MO. • Former San Diego State basketball coach Steve Fisher likes to joke that he’s Jim Sterk’s press agent.
“He’s never one to find a way to pat himself on the back,” Fisher said of Sterk, his athletics director from 2010-16. “He never tells a story about him doing all the glory work. I tell him, ‘I say more good things about you than anyone.’”
Coaches, Fisher added, don’t work for Sterk.
“They work with him,” he said.
That’s a common early impression shared by coaches around the University of Missouri, where Sterk is wrapping up his first school year as athletics director, a year that has seen Mizzou sports undergo pivotal changes on his watch.
