In a surprise to many, including myself, Missouri State announced on Thursday that it was parting ways with football coach Dave Steckel.
The most confusing part? The timing.
MSU Athletics Director Kyle Moats announced the day before Thanksgiving that Steckel was returning for a sixth season.
"We believe we can get it done," Moats said at the time. "This is a long term deal and he's got seven years to get it done and we fully expect that he gets that time to get it done. We believe we can."
Apparently, things changed. Moats said in Thursday's press release that he and Steckel met following the holidays to discuss football-related matters, which led to the mutual agreement.
