Nixa is now the hometown of an Olympic medalist.
Courtney Frerichs won the silver medal in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase run on Wednesday in Tokyo.
Frerichs, a Nixa native, finished with a time of 9:04.79. She finished behind Uganda's Peruth Chemutai.
Frerichs separated from the pack at about mid-way through the race and led until the final lap where she was passed by Chemutai.
When she crossed the finish line, she went to the ground in exhaustion but quickly got up. Frerichs put her hands over her mouth in tears with the realization she won an Olympic medal.
