Opening day the 'Daytona 500 of trout fishing in Missouri,' says hatchery manager

The air is thick with excitement as anglers prepare their rods and reels, and folks at a couple of Missouri's fish hatcheries are raring for the start of trout season.

Technically speaking, you can catch trout all year long, but March 1 marks the first day of catch-and-keep fishing season at Roaring River State Park near Cassville, Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon and Montauk State Park near Salem. The season wraps up Oct. 31.

Roaring River Hatchery Manager Paul Spurgeon said the damage from an April 2021 major flood has been repaired.

"The stream is all put back together from the floods that they had a year ago," Spurgeon said.
