Missouri State freshman pitcher Matt Russell will miss the rest of the season after suffering a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

During a start Sunday against Valparaiso, the pitcher was removed in the third inning.

The start was the second one of his career. The pitcher had a 4.88 ERA and a 1-0 record to go along with three saves and 26 strikeouts in 27.2 innings during his first season with the Bears.

Russell is expected to undergo surgery later this week and will face a six- to 12-month recovery process.
