Courier Journal turf writer Jason Frakes previews the Arkansas Derby and makes his picks.
As Magnum Moon neared the finish line in Saturday’s $1 million Arkansas Derby, Oaklawn Park track announcer Vic Stauffer excitedly summed up the scene over the crescendo of cheering fans.
“Get ready Kentucky,” Stauffer shouted, “there’s a bad Moon on the rise!”
Undefeated Magnum Moon, owned by Robert and Lawana Low of Springfield, scored a smashing five-length victory before an estimated 64,500 fans in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Now four-for-four lifetime, Magnum Moon will go to the Kentucky Derby on May 5 as one of the favorites.
