A penalty should have been called on the game-winning touchdown in Lutheran St. Charles' win over Lamar in the Class 2 state football championship on Friday in Columbia.
The penalty would have cost the Cougars five yards and could have forced a field goal when their kicking game appeared questionable late in the game.
The touchdown combined with the lack of a miracle play in the final seconds ended Lamar's chance at repeating as state champions and winning their ninth title in 11 seasons.
