Cleveland's Major League Baseball team announced Monday it will drop the "Indians" nickname — reigniting the conversation about Native American nicknames used by schools and athletic franchises.
The move is part of continuing social changes in sports and follows a similar decision by the NFL's Washington Football Team, which in July dropped its "Redskins" nickname under pressure from corporate sponsors such as Nike and FedEx.
Change is happening across the country regarding Native American team and school nicknames, and one leader in southwest Missouri would like to see it happen in the Ozarks as well.
