Big bass often lurk in small farm ponds

Compared with many ponds, it didn’t look much larger than a puddle, but I knew better. The pond’s size was deceiving. I had fished it often enough to realize that there were plenty of big bass living in the cramped quarters.

Standing close to the bank, I threw a purple plastic worm across the pond. As I began to work it through the moss on the opposite bank, I felt a strong tug at the end of the line.

Setting the hook, I watched a bass burst from the water and land with a loud belly-flop. Seconds later, a 3-pound bass was lifted out of the pond.
