Original SEC members Georgia, Mississippi State are infrequent foes

Georgia plays host to Mississippi State on Saturday in a game matching two of the original members of the SEC, but though they’ve belonged to the same league for 84 years, this week’s matchup will be just their 23rd meeting.

Thirteen institutions from the Southern Conference formed the SEC in December 1932, and first crowned a football champion the following year. Ten of those founding schools remain in the conference, including Georgia and Mississippi State. But they’ve rarely played each other. In fact, Georgia has played State fewer times (23) than any of the other original SEC members.
