Five takeaways from Mississippi State’s closer-than-the-Bulldogs’-would’ve-liked 56-41 victory over Samford on Saturday in Starkville.
Mississippi State sets school total offense record
The Bulldogs racked up 671 yards of total offense, which tops the previous record of 647 against Northwestern State last season. The Bulldogs threw for 417 yards and ran for 254 yards; the Bulldogs’ offense had its way with Samford’s defense. But it must be noted that the Bulldogs needed every yard to fend off their FCS opponent.
Nick Fitzgerald continues his development
Nick Fitzgerald remains a work-in-progress – remember that he was a run-first quarterback in high school – but he definitely showed progress Saturday.
