According to the NCAA, 7.4 percent of all football injuries are head injuries. While the number itself may seem low, the work to limit and ultimately bring that number to zero should never stop.
Dr. Mark Horstemeyer, who works within the Mechanical Engineering Department at Mississippi State, is doing his due diligence to help bring those numbers down.
Hosrstemeyer and his team have been working to develop a new football helmet in hopes of minimizing head injuries.
“This actually started with nuclear bombs from 1987 to 1992. We then evolved this to cars and with people, then, ultimately the human brain as a metric,” he said.
