Mississippi State University researchers are working to reduce concussions with a new, safer football helmet.
The school has posted on its official website the findings of its research and how its looking to better prevent the head injury from occurring.
“We’ve found that many helmets are designed more for looks than for safety,” said Mark Horstemeyer, professor of mechanical engineering and key member of the helmet design team. “We’re going to change the way helmets are viewed by teams and fans and provide the safest equipment possible.”
The team designed a virtual model of the human head which showed that brain injuries don’t come from an initial hit, but rather from stress waves that follow.
