HOOVER, Ala. – Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said Tuesday that Jeffery Simmons’ one-game suspension was a “university decision” and that “I wasn’t involved as much.”
Speaking at SEC Media Days, Mullen described the school’s due diligence on Simmons as “very, very thorough” and said “we thought Jeffery deserved the opportunity to be part of our family.”
Simmons, a five-star recruit from Macon (Miss.) Noxubee County, was charged with simple assault in March after punching a woman; the incident was caught on tape and posted in Facebook. Mississippi State announced in June that Simmons would be allowed to enroll but would be suspended for the season-opener against South Alabama.
