When Mississippi State kicker Artie Cosby trotted onto the field at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson on November 19, 1983, Ole Miss coach Billy Brewer thought the Rebels’ season was over.
The Rebels led the Bulldogs 24-23 with 24 seconds remaining, but Cosby had a chip-shot 27-yard field goal. As for the season potentially being over, Ole Miss was 5-5 and needed a win to end a bowl drought that dated to 1971.
Even getting to 5-5 was a feat, as the Rebels opened 0-3 with losses to Memphis, Tulane and a 40-0 shellacking by Alabama.
