Professional ice hockey, while never entirely or thoroughly genteel, was apparently in its formative years so compelling of good sportsmanship that a trophy was dedicated to honor the game's gentleman of the year, the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. Frank Nighbor of the Ottawa Senators won the first two Byngs, in 1925 and 1926.
The trophy goes to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability."
In other words, this Steve Ott fellow with the St. Louis Blues will never be a recipient. He might come out on top if they ever have a trophy for Best Pest.
