Last year six independent DI teams banded together to form a pseudo conference that would allow the teams to pay the minimal twenty games against DI opponents to qualify for NCAA tournament eligibility. Prior to this the teams’ schedules typically considered of DIII opponent and were only able to play the DIII national championship at best. While one of those teams, Holy Cross, officially joined the Hockey East conference, the other five schools have banded together to form the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance (NWHA), a brand new DI conference. As such, the schools have also agreed to follow DI recruiting and scholarship rules.
