Trae Waynes could have been a star running back. He had other ideas.
When Waynes was in the eighth grade in Kenosha, Wis., he excelled on offense. Then one day he approached his father, Ron.
"He came to his dad and said, 'I want to hit people. I want to tackle people,' " Waynes' mother, Erin, said Friday.
That's when Waynes started delivering blows on the football field. It's continued for nearly a decade, and that's one reason the Vikings selected the Michigan State cornerback with the No. 11 pick in Thursday's first day of the three-day NFL Draft.
