Vikings plan to sign former Titans safety Michael Griffin

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Vikings plan to sign a safety who has played for one of their coaches in the past, but it wasn’t the one many expected they’d land.

The Vikings plan to sign former Tennessee Titans safety Michael Griffin, according to two league sources, and reunite him with defensive-backs coach Jerry Gray, who coached Griffin from 2011-13 as the Titans’ defensive coordinator. Tennessee released Griffin in February rather than pay him a $6.5 million base salary in 2016. Because he is technically a street free agent, he won’t count against the Vikings in calculations for compensatory picks, assuming the deal becomes official.
