MANKATO, Minn. -- Vikings cornerback Captain Munnerlyn thought he would play in the preseason opener last weekend. Instead, he did nothing but watch.
Munnerlyn started all 16 regular-season games last season, but it is evident in training camp that his status on the team is less secure. Newcomer Terence Newman is the likely starter at left corner with rookie Trae Waynes on the second team and Munnerlyn mostly being looked at as a nickel back.
Regardless, Munnerlyn was hoping to play in last Sunday's 14-3 victory over Pittsburgh in the Hall of Fame Game. He wondered Wednesday if his not playing might have had something to do with being slowed in training camp by a foot injury suffered last spring.
