Vikings: Adrian Peterson's record pursuit elicits split opinion from hall of famers

CANTON, Ohio -- Curtis Martin knows a bit about putting up big yards at an advanced age. In 2004, he became at 31 the oldest rushing champion in NFL history.

The hall of famer's career with the New York Jets ended the next season because of a knee injury, ending any chance he had of breaking Emmitt Smith's NFL career rushing record of 18,355 yards.

However, Martin now sees a running back in Minnesota's Adrian Peterson, 30, who could challenge his mark as the oldest rushing champion and also Smith's record.

"He can break Emmitt's record,'' Martin said during Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend.
