Cameron Smith – a 2019 fifth-round pick by the Vikings – has decided to retire. He missed all of last season because of open-heart surgery. Previously, he was on Minnesota’s practice squad, but he did get into 5 games in the 2019 season. He suffered a concussion in the first Minnesota Vikings preseason game.
It’s unfortunate news. That said, there are some things that are just far, far more important than football. A young man’s long-term health is one of those things. My hope is that Smith can quickly get and stay healthy. Perhaps he’ll stay involved in the game in some other capacity.
