Ex-Viking Kirk Lowdermilk 'elated' to see son John join practice squad

The Vikings on Tuesday signed safety John Lowdermilk, the son of former Minnesota center Kirk Lowdermilk, to their practice squad.

To make room, the Vikings released linebacker Terrance Plummer.

John Lowdermilk went undrafted last spring out of Iowa before signing with San Diego. He was released by the Chargers just before the start of the season.

Kirk Lowdermilk was with the Vikings from 1985-92, starting 86 of 114 games played. He also was with the Indianapolis Colts from 1993-96. His son was born in Edina.

Lowdermilk provides Minnesota with another safety for practice. Starters Harrison Smith and Andrew Sendejo are nursing knee injuries, and it remains to be seen how much they might be able to practice this week.
