MINNEAPOLIS -- After hitting five field goals, including two from more than 50 yards, in the Minnesota Vikings' 49-17 win over the New York Giants on Sunday night, kicker Blair Walsh was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Walsh won the award for the fifth time in his career, and for the first time since Week 12 of the 2013 season. He'd won it three times as a rookie, and became the second Vikings player to win in this year, following Marcus Sherels' award in Week 8.
The kicker missed an extra point on Sunday night, but finished the night with 19 points and gave a championship-week boost to a teammate who drafted him in fantasy football: Linebacker Chad Greenway selected Walsh, and though Greenway has given the kicker grief every time he's missed a field goal this season, Walsh's performance on Sunday gave him the last word.
