By the time Day Three of the NFL Draft rolls around, most of the top 100 players have been taken. The top performers from Power Five conferences that aced the Combine are off the board. And by the time the sixth round begins, another 75 players will be off the board. Draftees will be unfamiliar to even the most ardent college football fans, and draft coverage will begin to feature puppies or interviews with coaches as the draft continues in the background.
The reason is that while Tom Brady and Brock Purdy were selected in the sixth and seventh rounds, the reality is that only around 2% of players selected in these rounds become decent starters and most are out of the league in just under two years, on average.
