In Vikings news tonight, sometimes-maligned Minnesota Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel has commanded the most money of any free agent quarterback on the 2014 market so far, per the folks over at OverTheCap.com and ProFootballRumors.com.
Despite not being guaranteed to start the 2014 NFL season as the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback, Cassel's two-year, $10.5 million contract qualifies for the richest free agent contract signed by any quarterback this offseason -- which perhaps speaks to a relative lack of depth at the position in the market.
Matt Cassel is guaranteed to make at least $5.65 million, yet isn't guaranteed anything when it comes to starting for the team come the 2014 NFL season.
Multiple NFL sources are indicating that the Minnesota Vikings are targeting a quarterback with the #8 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, leading to speculation that the Vikings locked up Cassel in order to have a viable backup option to whichever potential franchise quarterback they decide to draft in May.
Either way, Matt Cassel is getting paid better than the likes of someone like Michael Vick, who is scheduled to make a fully guaranteed $4 million with the New York Jets in 2014.
