Timbers beat NYCFC to go top in West; Jozy Altidore lifts Toronto by San Jose

Diego Valeri scored his 17th goal of the season to help the Portland Timbers move to the top of MLS's Western Conference with a 1-0 win at New York City FC on Saturday.

The only goal came just before halftime when Darren Mattocks dispossessed Andrea Pirlo deep in his own zone -- leaving the Italy legend calling for a foul that never came -- and fed Valeri in the center of the box.

Valeri's tally is tied for second-most in the league with Chicago's Nemanja Nikolic, two behind NYCFC's David Villa.

Portland moved about rival Seattle to top the West table by two points, though the Sounders still have two games in hand.
