The LED lights installed in the PTFE screen wrapped around Allianz Field allow for a broad palette of colors, but typically, the building is lit in a subdued hue of blue, connecting the stadium to the calm flickering of light across a lake’s surface. But when the stadium opened in 2019, Minnesota United quietly started a tradition: after wins, Allianz Field would be lit up like the Northern Lights in a rotating pattern of blue, purple and green. With only two losses that year, it’s possible the display didn’t stand out. In the midst of this ongoing pandemic, though, Allianz Field is once again being lit with the Northern Lights pattern every Sunday evening, a quiet but visible reminder that together, we will get through this.
