It was a tough weekend for the expansion clubs. Both Minnesota United and Atlanta United lost their inaugural matches and both met a tidal wave of hot takes and negative responses on social media. Looking at the scoreline of MNUFC’s 5-1 loss to Portland Timbers FC, the response across the country (and with certain fans in Minnesota) was that the Loons may not be ready for MLS competition and that Grant Wahl’s infamous prediction may be right. Atlanta United’s 2-1 loss to New York Red Bulls on Sunday was met with negativity but it was not because of the result of the game, instead because the Atlanta supporters’ reaction to the result.
