As expected, the Twins placed right-handed pitcher Casey Fien on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a strained throwing shoulder.
Fellow righty Michael Tonkin was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take Fien's place.
Fien was removed from Wednesday's 10-7 loss to the Detroit Tigers in the ninth inning, shortly after allowing a long two-run homer to Miguel Cabrera. Afterward, manager Paul Molitor said Fien was dealing with a "tender shoulder."
Fien, who was working a second inning for the third time this year, had thrown 27 pitches when he was removed. It was the sixth appearance in nine days for Fien, who worked more than one inning just three times all last season.
