Minnesota Twins great Rod Carew is fighting congestive heart failure and on the list for a heart transplant after suffering a massive heart attack on Sept. 20.
A post on the American Heart Association web site says doctors implanted a battery-operated ventricular assist device that could work well enough to take him off the donor list.
"Carew isn't far enough along to know which it'll be," the post reads.
Carew, 70, suffered a heart attack on a golf course near his home in Cuesta Verde, Calif. He has since decided to work with the American Heart Association.
