MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins placed right-handed reliever Casey Fien on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a right shoulder strain, and they recalled fellow right-handed reliever Michael Tonkin from Triple-A Rochester.
Fien sustained the injury while pitching in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 10-7 loss to the Tigers. He left the game in the middle of an at-bat against Victor Martinez.
Fien, 31, is Minnesota's top setup reliever, and he had posted a 4.35 ERA with five holds in nine relief appearances. He struck out three and walked none in 10 1/3 innings.
