U hires outside firm to examine athletics department practices

The University of Minnesota and Virginia Commonwealth University each paid out settlements in excess of $100,000 to settle gender discrimination complaints within the athletics departments run by Norwood Teague.

UMN on Tuesday acknowledged paying former senior athletics director Regina Sullivan $175,000 in April 2014 to settle a complaint filed through the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Teague, who resigned Friday in the wake of a sexual harassment investigation into his behavior with two female colleagues, left VCU to be Minnesota's athletics director in June 2012. Five months later, he fired Sullivan and and fellow senior associate AD Jason LaFrenz in what was described as an organizational shift.
