Schwan Food Co. and its foundation are contributing $1 million toward University of Minnesota athletic and academic programs over the next three years.
Some of the money will come in the form of a sponsorship of men's and women's sports teams, but most is philanthropic, the Marshall-based company said.
The money will support a nutrition center inside Athletes Village, on which construction should begin later this year, as well as undergraduate scholarships in food, agricultural and natural resource sciences, nutritional and food-safety research, and women's leadership programs.
"This investment reinforces our commitment to advancing healthier communities and promoting youth education and leadership development within our home state of Minnesota," CEO Dimitrios Smyrnios said in a statement.
