Sophomore Jose Mendez has been the University fo Minnesota's best golfer for two years.
Last season, he tied for first at the Big Ten Championships, leading the Gophers to the conference title. This season, the Costa Rica native's combined fall/spring average (71.42) is third-best in school history, behind only 1998 national champion James McLean, 70.89 in 1998-99 and 71.39 in 1997-98.
Mendez, who won the 2013 Callaway Junior World Golf Championship in the 15-17 age division, will lead the Gophers back to the Big Ten Championships that begin Friday.
