Defensive back Benny Sapp III has announced via Twitter that he is entering the transfer portal, signaling the end of his career at the University of Minnesota.
Sapp was sought-after recruit in high school, drawing scholarship offers from Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, and a bevy of other Power 5 programs after his sophomore season before knee injuries and multiple surgeries derailed his recruitment. He ended up signing with Minnesota, but struggled to see the field in his first two seasons of limited action with the Gophers. Sapp had been competing with sophomore Tyler Nubin for the vacant starting safety spot, but did not earn any snaps against Michigan in last week’s season opener.
