For most of this season, the Gophers running game had been three yards and a cloud of concern.
After averaging more than four yards per carry during eight-win seasons in both 2013 and 2014, the Gophers had consternation over their misplaced identity as a power-running program.
Minnesota mustered 3.7 yards per carry over five games -- the lowest mark compared to any of coach Jerry Kill's four full seasons. They were tied for 95th among 128 FBS teams with 706 rushing yards.
"We had to fix something," Kill said.
