Former University of Minnesota hockey coach Glen Sonmor, who also led the expansion NHL North Stars, has died. He was 86.
Sonmor, a native of Saskatchewan, Canada, was living near Toronto but has long been a staple of Minnesota's hockey community, starting as a player for the Minneapolis Millers in 1949.
He played in the NHL for five years, his career cut short by slap shot to his left eye in 1955, but built his local reputation as a coach with the Gophers (1966-71), St. Paul Saints (1972-77) and North Stars, on three different occasions between 1978-87.
