Solemn pats on the helmet from his teammates were the only reward Eric Schierhorn received after playing well in his college debut for Minnesota.
The freshman goaltender made 24 saves Saturday night against Vermont, but two bounces off his pads spoiled an otherwise fine outing in net as the No. 8 Gophers lost 3-0 in their season opener against Vermont.
Schierhorn was the first goalie to get the chance to replace Adam Wilcox for the Gophers, chosen because Minnesota head coach Don Lucia liked his experience playing for the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League last year.
