Gophers freshman Jeff Jones, the top flight recruit in Minnesota's 2014 class, has decided to transfer to a junior college for 2016, a source said Wednesday.
The lauded former Minneapolis Washburn running back struggled to establish himself at Minnesota and will transfer to Iowa Western Community College.
Jones had issues with academics this semester and sees the move as an opportunity to improve in the classroom, play football and possibly transfer back to Minnesota, the source said.
Jones came to the Gophers ranked as the No. 1 player high school in Minnesota and the 137th-best in the nation according to ESPN.
