Does 40 college bowl games make sense? It definitely makes dollars.

DETROIT -- With 63 percent of college football teams playing in a record-high 40 bowl games this season, jokes are rampant about undeserving programs -- such as the 5-7 Gophers -- accepting bids and receiving participation ribbons.

Everybody gets one!

But the NCAA is essentially laughing all the way to the bank, and at least two more groups want to add bowl games to the lineup next year.

With the addition of the College Football Playoff after last season, bowl revenue for conferences and schools jumped from $309 million to a record high $505 million, according to NCAA figures.
