Civil rights complaint cites pattern of gender bias in UMN athletics

A civil rights complaint against the University of Minnesota filed on behalf of the men's and women's track teams claims the $190 million Athletes Village project set to break ground in September violates federal gender equity laws.

The complaint, acquired by the Pioneer Press in a Freedom of Information Act request, states that the project "discriminates on the basis of sex" because it will temporarily leave the school's track teams without an outdoor facility and ultimately move them off the main campus.

The complaint also contends the project -- which comprises practice facilities for football and men's and women's basketball, as well as academic/cafeteria space for all student-athletes -- perpetuates a recent pattern of favoring men's sports.
