The backyard rink doesn’t exist anymore.
But it was where Minnesota’s Eric Schierhorn first learned to skate. It’s where he, the youngest of three siblings, wore goaltender pads in exchange for ice time.
“My two older brothers were like, ‘Hey you want to play you got to strap on the pads.’ So I just put on the pads one time on the rink and just kind of went from there,” Schierhorn said. The tale, of a youngest sibling being forced to play goalie and going on to great heights, is one as old as hockey itself.
“[My favorite thing is] making a big stop when your team needs it, providing your team that energy or making a big stop and seeing the guy on the other team look up in the air in frustration.
