Will Smith continues to struggle in relief

Miami – On a night when Ariel Pena made his first major-league start for the Milwaukee Brewers and catcher Nevin Ashley played his first game at the top level, the bigger story was the continued second-half struggles of reliever Will Smith.

Miami got to Smith for three runs in the seventh inning – two charged to him – to snap a tie and go on to a 5-2 victory Wednesday night at Marlins Park. The Brewers dropped the last two games of the series after taking the opener.

Smith has allowed seven earned runs over seven innings in his last eight games, marking the second consecutive season the workhorse reliever has slipped after in the second half.
